Apex Legends is one of the clearest examples of how a game's Linux support depends on a publisher's decision, not on the underlying technology.

What happened

According to the Are We Anti-Cheat Yet dataset, Linux support for Apex Legends was enabled shortly after the Steam Deck launched in early 2022, which let players on Linux and Steam Deck play online using Easy Anti-Cheat's Proton runtime. On October 31, 2024 the game's official account announced that Linux support was being disabled, and the game's status moved to Denied.

What this means for you

If you play on Linux or Steam Deck, Apex Legends is not a safe purchase right now. Do not try to force the anti-cheat to load. Unsupported setups can lead to bans.

We are not speculating about the publisher's reasons here. Check the Apex Legends page for the latest status and reference links, and see our Easy Anti-Cheat vendor profile for how the Linux runtime works. To understand why this is possible at all, read how anti-cheat runs on Proton.
